Maradona backs Ronaldo for Ballon d´Or

Argentina legend Diego Maradona believes Cristiano Ronaldo is more deserving of the FIFA Ballon d Or than compatriot Lionel Messi.

The prestigious award is set to be handed out in Zurich on January 13, with Ronaldo, Messi and Bayern Munich s Franck Ribery all in the running to be crowned the world s best player.

A win for the Argentina international would see him ranked as the best player on the planet for the fifth year running, but Maradona claims 2008 winner Ronaldo should take the honour.

Former Argentina international Maradona, his country s coach for the FIFA World Cup in 2010, feels Messi s injury problems this season have held him back and Real Madrid forward Ronaldo has earned the accolade.

Cristiano Ronaldo should win. Messi has been injured a lot th…

Everton 1 Manchester United 2: Martial´s last-gasp winner piles misery on under-fire Martinez

Anthony Martial struck in stoppage time to send Manchester United in to the FA Cup final with a 2-1 win over Everton, capping a miserable week for the Merseyside club.

Roberto Martinez s team were much improved from the midweek derby rout they suffered at the hands of Liverpool but Martial ensured there will be no let-up in the growing pressure on the Spaniard.

France international Martial dazzled throughout Saturday s clash at Wembley and crafted the opening goal for United s former Everton midfielder Marouane Fellaini.

David de Gea s magnificent penalty save from Romelu Lukaku, who missed a host of opportunities on an afternoon to forget, seemed to galvanise Martinez s men, who dominated the closing half an hour and deservedly equalised through a Chris Smal…

Kaka: I feel like a kid about to debut

Kaka has set himself a short-term target of scoring his 100th goal for Milan as he prepares for his first game back with the club.

The 31-year-old Brazil international has returned to Milan after four seasons with Real Madrid and wants to quickly score five goals to reach the 100-goal mark for the Serie A club.

Kaka could play for Milan against Torino on Saturday and speaking ahead of the trip to Turin, the veteran attacking midfielder underlined how excited he is at the prospect of pulling on the red-and-black-striped shirt again.

I am happy with all this enthusiasm, Kaka said.

I am training well and feel like a kid about to make his debut.

Kaka scored 95 goals in 270 games for Milan between 2003 and 2009 but only managed 29 in 120 matches for Real.

Russia v Slovakia: Fans in the spotlight ahead of pivotal Lille showdown

The behaviour of supporters has dominated most of the headlines ahead of Russia s second Euro 2016 Group B match against Slovakia in Lille on Wednesday.

Clashes between Russian, English and French hooligans caused mayhem in Marseille ahead of the 1-1 draw with England last weekend, prompting riot police to intervene with teargas, although none of the six individuals charged with criminal offences were Russian.

The match itself was overshadowed by more violence as scores of Russian fans crossed a feeble cordon in the stands to attack the English and neutral supporters, leading to a number of injuries and the arrest of two more individuals for pitch encroachment.

Despite UEFA warnings over possible disqualification, Russian Football Union executive committee membe…

Walker eyes top four after Tottenham extension

Kyle Walker is determined to repay Tottenham s faith in him by helping them to secure a top-four finish in the Premier League this season.

England right-back Walker signed a new six-year contract on Monday, which will keep him at White Hart Lane until 2019.

The 23-year-old joined Spurs from Sheffield United in 2009 and is eyeing a long stint at a club he believes are heading in the right direction under boss Andre Villas-Boas.

It s fantastic, he told the club s official website. When I first signed here at the age of 18, I always wanted to make it a long stay.

The lads are fantastic as well as the manager and everyone surrounding the club – it just makes it a lot easier when they do offer you a contract to sign it.

I m very thankful to the chairman (Danie…

West Brom sign Matty Phillips

Premier League outfit West Bromwich have made Matty Phillips their first signing of the summer transfer window.

The highly rated winger penned a four-year contract at the Hawthorns as the Baggies .

West Bromwich fans will be delighted with the news having seen Stephane Sessegnon, Victor Anichebe and Anders Lindegaard all leave the club on a free transfer.

Matty Phillips spent last three years with QPR, and he was especially impressive last term, bagging 8 goals in 44 Championship appearances.

Okubo pleased with wing performance

Japan striker Yoshito Okubo reckons he can do a job as a winger at the FIFA World Cup, despite being subbed at half-time versus Costa Rica.

Okubo started on the right flank of Alberto Zaccheroni s preferred 4-2-3-1 formation in Monday s friendly and was replaced by regular starter Shinji Okazaki at the break.

Japan struggled to produce the ideal final pass or shot in the first 45 minutes with Okubo and Yuya Osako on the pitch but the introduction of Okazaki and Yoichiro Kakitani in the second half saw Zaccheroni s men triumph 3-1.

But despite having never played as a right winger before, Okubo argued he can be relied upon at Brazil 2014, if Zaccheroni wants to make changes.

Since I didn t have any training for playing on the right wing, I had some worries when I …

Hard for Lazio to hold on to Milinkovic-Savic, says Lotito

Lazio president Claudio Lotito admits it will be difficult to keep Sergej Milinkovic-Savic in Rome should the likes of Barcelona and Real Madrid come calling.

Serbia international Milinkovic-Savic has established himself as one of the hottest properties in European football since his move from Genk in 2015.

Top clubs from the Premier League, Serie A, Ligue 1 and LaLiga were heavily linked with the 23-year-old during the transfer window, but no offers materialised and he signed a new contract in October.

Reports in Italy have suggested the midfielder has a release clause in the region of €150million, and should a club meet that valuation Lotito knows it will be tough to say no.

Nowadays it s very complicated for a player to tie himself to a club for h…

Dortmund in for Origi

Borussia Dortmund and have opened talks for a potential transfer of Divock Origi to Signal Iduna Park, according to  who quote their own sources.

Liverpool signed Origi from Lille on the back of some very encouraging displays for Belgium in the 2014 World Cup at the age of 19, but the deal included a loan back to the French side for the first year. Having arrived to Anfield in earnest in 2015, he competed for a spot in the team with the likes of Danny Ings and compatriot Christian Benteke, and he played a vital part in Liverpool s march to the Europa League final in 2016.

However, with manager Jürgen Klopp transforming Roberto Firmino into a striker and the arrivals of Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah, the bar has been significantly raised and Origi found himself in a ve…
