Euro 2012 qualifying preview: Spain v Scotland

Scotland must topple world champions Spain if they are to guarantee a place in the Euro 2012 qualifying playoffs.

Craig Levein s Scotland, who defeated Lichtenstein 1-0 away from home on Saturday, are second in Euro qualifying Group I with 11 points.

They are 10 points back from group winners Spain, who have already secured a place at next year s finals in Poland and the Ukraine.

The Czech Republic are third, one point behind Scotland following a 2-0 loss at home to Spain on Friday.

Michal Bilek s side must win their final match on Tuesday if it is to finish second, but will be reasonably confident of doing so given their last outing is an away tie against fourth-placed Lithuania.

While hardly a guaranteed three points, it is an easier prospect than the task facing Scotland, who visit the reigning European and World Cup champions.

Spain boast a 100 percent record from their seven matches played in Group I, scoring 23 goals and conceding just five along the way.

Away from competitive fixtures, Spain have suffered three defeats since their World Cup final victory over the Netherlands in July 2010.

Losses to Argentina, Portugal and Italy have shown Vicente del Bosque s men are not invincible.

Scotland can also take heart from their performance in the first meeting between the two teams in Group I, at Hampden Park in October 2010.

Spain went 2-0 ahead in Glasgow and appeared on course for a comfortable victory, before a Steven Naismith strike and Gerard Pique s own goal saw the hosts draw level.

And Scotland were within sight of a valuable point, only for Fernando Llorente to strike with 11 minutes to go, snatching all three points for the visitors.

Levein, already without captain Darren Fletcher and first-choice striker Kenny Miller, could be deprived of Barry Bannan and Craig Mackail-Smith for the all-important final match at Hercules Estadio Jose Rico Perez.

Aston Villa midfielder Bannan is struggling with a gashed heel, while Brighton forward Mackail-Smith scorer of the winner against Lichtenstein in Vaduz has been troubled with a back complaint.

Spain will be without Real Madrid defender Raul Albiol for the match in Alicante due to a fractured cheekbone suffered during training on Sunday.

Albiol s absence means a fit-again Carles Puyol is likely join Barcelona teammate Pique in what was Spain s first-choice centre-back partnership for their World Cup triumph.
